Dr Rod Hackney, born in Liverpool, England, is a former Presidency of the International Union of Architects, (France), the Royal Institute of British Architects (London), and the Snowdonia National Park (Wales). Rod Hackney is employed on various initiatives as a facilitator or coordinator in projects linking those in need, such as community groups, to those who provide, such as private financiers or Governmental Departments.
According to The Times newspaper in London, the first Community Architect with over 20 offices throughout the World, a regular contributor to radio and T.V. programmes and a keen debater, including a panelist on European talk shows such as Any Questions on BBC Radio; Question Time, BBC T.V; Oxford Union debater; Eton College debater.
Rod has been featured in a number of Media documentaries on his work, such as the BBC Omnibus program and R.A.I, Italy, called the 'The Hackney Way’.
He was invited to represent the United Nations on a number of occasions, including the Habitat initiatives, the best practices in Architecture in Dubai 2003, on the theme of Shelter for the Elderly, New York City in the 1990s and Nairobi Kenya in the 1980s. He is frequently invited to put the case for more community involvement in housing at a number of conferences and symposia including official visits sponsored by the British Council to Russia, India and Sri Lanka.
Rod also communicates through theatre and music. The Musical Play, "Good Golly, Miss Molly" depicted the Hawes Street community architecture scheme in Stoke-on-Trent in England ran in London’s West End where it played to full houses in 1991 and 1992.
Rod is an artist and a writer. His autobiography, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly reached No.1 in one of Britain’s retail bookshops in 1989. He regularly chairs or partakes in international design competitions, and has working experience in the Far East, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas.
Rod has designed Banks, (the Kuwait Central Bank with Arne Jacobsen); Housing schemes, both new build and rehabilitation, (the Sydmonton Estate for Andrew Lloyd Weber, the Roan Court Complex for Castward, Serotina for Castward, the Black Road self-help community/sustainable housing schemes, the North Evington Elderly peoples home project for the East Midlands Housing Association,); Hospices (for Macmillan Homes); Medical buildings (Wilmslow Hospital, Congleton Doctors Surgery); and diverse schemes ranging from sustainable farms to town and regional urban projects, (Carlisle, Burnley, Leicester, Krutzberg, Birmingham, Chesterfield), with some of these schemes involving finding new uses for redundant buildings.
